Internet Dangers

The purpose of this post is to advise other students about a specific internet danger that you have researched and are familiar with. For full credit include the types of information shown in the example below. You could even copy and paste the example, then replace my info with your own.

Danger:
Criminals use computer technology to obtain large amounts of personal data such as passwords or even banking information.
Prevention: Do NOT
respond to "spam" ­ unsolicited E-mail ­ that promises them some benefit but requests identifying data, without realizing that in many cases, the requester has no intention of keeping his promise.

  1. Danger: People will use the computer to send out fake emails which trick others into giving away private, and important information.


    Prevention: Make sure your computer is updated and scanned regularly (as scheduled or done manually) with the INVISUS security suite.
    Ensure that your Windows desktop protection is current by going to Windows Update. Confirm that you have an updated antivirus software program running on your PC.


    Don’t click links or call telephone numbers included in suspect messages. Instead, contact the bank directly by using phone numbers or addresses listed in published directories.


    Don’t open e-mail attachments. In particular, e-mail attachments with “.scr,” “.com” and “.exe” file extensions are likely malicious

  2. Danger: Sexual Predators can use the information of yourself that you put out to find you and sexually assault possibly in some way.
    Prevention: Do not send out too much information onto the internet, or to make it even better, make up a crazy address of phone number that they cannot reach you with.

  3. Danger: Pornography can become a pop up on your computer and it worries parents a lot. Also research suggests that most parents don't realize that their children go online to look at internet porn.
    Prevention:Keep a close eye on your children when they are on the computer and put a pop up blocker software onto your computer so there is a slimmer chance of children seeing things they shouldn't.

  5. Danger: There are many people out there that use the internet as a way to scheme people out of money. They will send emails to people with misleading good deals and people often take and send their money in but never actually get the product or their money back.

    Prevention: You should not take deals that you receive by and unknown source in an email. Your best bet is to go to an actual store or a store’s website so you won’t get scammed out of your money.

  6. Danger:Hackers are using a phony news report to trick people into going to a malicious web page that displays what appears to be a video player showing the mushroom cloud of a nuclear explosion.

    Prevention: Dont Click on popups,Nowhat you are clicking on befor you click it.Or you could watch the news on the tv instead of on the internet.

  7. Danger: Internet content is totally uncensored. Because of this, children surfing the Web can be exposed to sexual, malicious, racist and violent content in e-mail messages, chats and forums.

    Pevention: Only go onto chat rooms and forums that are apporpriate to there age and limit the sites that they are able to go on to.

  8. Danger: The danger of using the computer is that some people trick other people into giving there identity away.

    Prevention: Do not open e-mails that you dont who it is. You have to go over your computer to make sure everything is going good. Dont put your real adderess or telephone on a website.

  9. Danger: Cyberbullying: Cyberbullying includes sending hateful messages or even death threats to children, spreading lies about them online, making nasty comments on their social networking profiles, or creating a website to bash their looks or reputation.

  10. Danger: when you blog you could get found by someone and they could something bad like a murder or a rape.

    Prevention: How to prevent this from happening is keep your birth date to your self and your name if you dont know someone then dont talk to them

  11. Danger: Children can unexpectedly come across material of a sexual or violent nature when surfing the internet because there are no regulations or controls on what kind of material can be placed on the web.

    Prevention: The best thing to do is have parents be more aware of what their children are doing on the internet and talk to them about safe internet use. You can also block certain softwares and use filters for when they are on the internet.

  12. Danger: Kids can use the internet to socially attack someone that they dislike. When they put degrading stuff on the internet about someone else, it can spread around real fast and pretty soon everyoone will know about it.

    Prevention: Parents should check on their kids internet activity once in a while but should not go crazy and over protective like some parents do.

  13. Danger: Internet addiction, it can take over someones life, and they can become very lazy, and not want to do anything else. It can be hard when you find interesting things on the internet, and it can take over your life.


    Prevention: By monitoring your time that you spend on the computer, and only visiting certian sites.

  14. Danger: Kids if not supervised while on the internet can come across inappropriate web-sites. Kids also will meet new people and sometimes want to search for people they don't even know. Sex offenders often use the internet as a reliable source to communicate with kids and get to know their personal information.

    Prevention: This can be stopped by putting a parental control on certain websites. Also watching your kid while he/she is on the computer. Blocking certain things on the computer will help prevent the kids from meeting sex offenders. If your kid does use AIM you can make sure they know everyone they talk to.
